The New York office of iXL, a global internet company, initially moved into a generic office space but soon concluded that the reception and conference suite needed to be re-designed to best project the company image.
We used layered planes of switchable and translucent colored glass and perforated aluminum, together with virtual planes of light, to define the boundary between the reception area and the conference and executive suites beyond. The variable degrees of the planes' translucency and overlapping modulate transparency and privacy, and thus the boundary itself. This layering of materials and light reflections creates a "deep space" of images - a metaphor for the space of the Internet, the medium of the company's work.
The main conference room, equipped with an interactive table, is dominated by a projection screen surrounded by a halo of light. When not in active use, the screen is programmed to change colors at very slow intervals, creating different moods within the space.
